Child Car Seat Rules in Los Angeles, CA
What Parents Must Know
Under California Vehicle Code Sections 27360, 27360.5, and 27360.6, every child riding in a passenger vehicle in Los Angeles and throughout the state — including taxis and for-hire cars — must be secured in a restraint system that matches their age, weight, and height. A child restraint violation is a primary offense, meaning an officer can stop a vehicle for this reason alone.
Rear-Facing Seats
Under age 2, unless 40 lbs or 40 inches
Children must ride in a rear-facing car seat with a harness until they turn 2, unless they already weigh more than 40 pounds or stand taller than 40 inches — whichever limit they reach first.
Never install a rear-facing seat in the front passenger seat unless the airbag has been deactivated.
Forward-Facing Seats
Typically once rear-facing limits are outgrown, until around 40 lbs / 40 inches
After a child outgrows the rear-facing seat, California law allows a forward-facing harness seat in the back seat, secured with the vehicle’s harness system, until the child is ready to move up to a booster.
Recommended only after outgrowing rear-facing limits-not by age alone.wing rear-facing limits—not by age alone.
Booster Seats
Under age 8, until at least 4'9" (57 inches) tall
Once a child outgrows a forward-facing harness seat, California law requires children under 8 to ride in the back seat in an appropriate booster seat, secured with the vehicle’s lap-and-shoulder belt, until they reach age 8 or 4’9″ in height.
Seat Belts & Placement
Age 8 and up, or at least 4'9" (57 inches) tall
Children who reach either milestone may use a properly fitted seat belt without a booster; children ages 8–15 must still be secured with a seat belt or appropriate restraint under Section 27360.5.
A violation of Vehicle Code 27360/27360.5 carries a base fine of $100 for a first offense and $250 for each subsequent offense — once court fees and penalty assessments are added, a first ticket typically totals around $490–$500, and a repeat offense can exceed $1,000. A conviction also adds one point to the driver’s DMV record. Parents traveling to or from LAX and other Southern California airports are responsible for ensuring an appropriate car seat is secured before departure. Content newark childsaferides.xlsx XLSX
