Child Car Seat Rules in Boston, MA

What Parents Must Know

Under Massachusetts General Laws (Chapter 90, Section 7AA), child passenger safety is strictly enforced across Boston and throughout the Commonwealth. All children riding in passenger vehicles—including taxis and rideshares—must be secured in a federally approved restraint system until they reach 8 years of age or exceed 57 inches (4’9″) in height.

Rear-Facing Seats

Infants under 1 year and 20 lbs (mandatory)

Keep children rear-facing until age 2–3 or until reaching maximum seat limits.

Never install rear-facing seats in the front passenger seat.

Forward-Facing Seats

Typically ages 2–4 or 40+ lbs

Use a 5-point harness and top tether

Recommended once outgrowing rear-facing limits

Booster Seats

Until they reach age 8 or 57 inches

Required for children who have outgrown forward-facing seats.

Seat Belts & Placement

Children over age 8 (or taller than 57 inches)

Must wear properly fitted vehicle seat belts

All children under 13 should remain in the back seat.

Because this is a primary enforcement law, drivers can be pulled over directly for non-compliance, facing fines starting at $25 per infraction. Parents traveling to or from Boston Logan Airport are responsible for ensuring appropriate car seats are secured before departure.
